APA Community Membership
Support us, so we can support your communities.
This yearly membership is a crowdfunded, on-call support system for the people who lead your communities. I help them, help you. Ultimately, if I do this right, you should not actively notice anything. Training in your city and others will hopefully just get a little better.
Being a leader in a community is, at times, damn hard. When I started, there was nobody to ask for help; you just did what you thought was right and hoped it was the best choice. If the leader was the problem, there was nobody to go to.
I want to be honest about where my role in the APA is at. Because the NSO timeline has moved from weeks to a year, I’ve had to stop receiving any form of wage. It was a guaranteed way to sink the APA before we reached our goal of government recogn ition. Over the last two months, I have had less time for APA and community work because of this. However, regardless of pay, I want to see parkour in Australia flourish, so I am in it for the long haul even if nobody is able to contribute.
My goal is to create sustainable jobs so we can get not just me, but a team of people on full-time to make parkour in Australia as good as it can be by supporting its communities and leaders.
The price point of $30 a year is arbitrarily set. To pay one person at minimum wage full-time for one year we would need 1,300 members to sign up, which at this point is unrealistic, so we have also added a donations page. Please only donate if parkour has really helped you and you are now in the financial position to be able to ensure others get that opportunity as well.
The Community Snapshot
With over 100 responses, we are ecstatic with the outcome of the survey. We are currently putting the information into some nicer formats, but as a whole, Australia is looking really positive.
The major downfall was state bodies being difficult to get in contact with, which is understandable considering we only have four in operation currently. (PS: Reach out if you want help raising a state body! We are here to help.)
State Body Momentum
Our newest state body, NSW Parkour, is hitting the ground running. They are deep in planning for the upcoming National Parkour Gathering (NATGAT).
They are truly reaching to grow NATGAT into something far bigger than it ever has been. While no details are confirmed yet, I personally am excited to see it unfold in the background.
Competition Framework: Speed Runs
We are refining rulesets on how we run competitions in Australia. We specifically are moving away from valuing the spectator to ensure that athlete safety and staying community-focused are the priorities instead.
1st Bracket – Entry-Level Social Qualifier: This is a low-stakes, non-competitive environment that everyone is encouraged to try. The setup includes:
A low-risk setup suitable for a complete beginner to try safely.
At least two identical lanes, with unlimited attempts over a set time period.
Submission at this level is by filming, not by a panel, judges, or other means. The goal is participation with the lowest pressure environment we can create, maintaining the "jam" and community spirit of parkour.
2nd Bracket – Technical: For those moving forward, we design "floor is lava" style courses with technical setups that require deceleration, connection, and precision. These cannot be bypassed by raw momentum or strength alone, ensuring that skill, not risk-taking, is rewarded.
3rd Bracket – Speed: Only after passing through the technical filter do athletes reach a "true" traditional-style speed run course.
Running just brackets 1 and 2 would be suitable for most state competitions. We would only run the 3rd bracket with higher-level planning and risk mitigation.
We would love to hear your thoughts.
That’s the February update done.
